Story
Thanks for taking the time to visit my JustGiving page.
John and I are aiming to ride the 1100 miles from John O'Groats to Land's End via Cape Wrath during September to raise £1,100 for the Rosemere Cancer Foundation, based at Royal Preston hospital where my wife has been successfully treated for cancer twice, and in memory of my good friend and cycling companion Brian, with whom I had intended to complete the ride for his 80th birthday. Sadly Covid and a tragic RTA has prevented this, and it will be the first time I have ridden this route North to South. This will be the longest ride I have ever undertaken, and I hope my oldish legs will manage to convey me the enormous distance involved.
The ride will be unsupported and cover some of the best cycling territory in the country, visiting many places Brian and I had ridden previously. It will include a 35 mile trip to the 24 hour cafe at Cape Wrath light house along a rough land rover track where we may have to dodge the RAF who use the area as a bombing range! For those of you who like numbers, there will be 3 countries, 3 corners, 6 ferry crossings, 2 islands and a daily average of 50 miles over a total distance of roughly 1100, depending on how many times we get lost, and an estimated 40,000 feet of climbing!
We will no doubt take the route gently to enjoy the country side and the journey, staying in a variety of levels of accommodation, from friends to Travelodges to Youth Hostels, to a converted sheriff's court house in Fort William with genuine cells you can stay in. The owner of a shepherd’s hut near Thirlmere has very kindly let us use it for £10 as a good will gesture .
