Story
As many of you may be aware, I was diagnosed with a rare and aggressive form of soft tissue cancer shortly after I left school when I was 18. I was told that, due to the rarity of the cancer, for any chance of survival I would need to see a specialist consultant in London for treatment. In a strange way this turned out to be a positive thing as I was lucky enough to be cared for in a Teenage Cancer Trust Unit in UCLH.
The Teenage Cancer Trust provides specialist wards in NHS hospitals, specifically for teenagers, as the name suggests. They have fantastic facilities and really know how to look after young people. The teenage unit became a kind of home from home and whilst I can't say that I looked forward to going there (as it was to receive bouts of chemotherapy!), I can say that the environment they provided made the experience as relaxed and stress free as it could be for me and my family. The more money the charity receives the more units of this nature they can provide, which ultimately means that more teenagers who find themselves in my position will be lucky enough to receive care to the standard I did.
