Story
Cheers for taking the time to visit my JustGiving page.
As some of you may know on Sunday the 17th of April I will be running
the 2011 London Marathon and will be raising money for S.O.S.
The Sumatran Orangutan Society.
Why S.O.S? The Sumatran Orangutan Society is a charity dedicated to the
conservation and welfare of the Sumatran orangutans and there
environment. So why is this so important?
There are less than 6,650 surviving orangutans in Sumatra today.
Almost half of Sumatra’s forests have been lost in the last 25 years.
The expansion of oil palm plantations into fragile eco systems is the biggest
threat orangutans’ continued survival.
You find palm oil in a variety of household goods including
chocolate,
bread,
spreads, and cereals.
Every minute an area of forest the size of 6 football fields is lost in Indonesia.
The destruction of rainforests and the poaching of young orangutans for the
pet trade contribute to their decline.
Sumatra’s forests provide a livelihood to many Indonesian people without
which their existence is also endangered.
Other rare and precious wildlife share the orangutans’ habitat such as
Sumatran
elephant, tiger, rhinoceros and clouded leopard.
