Story

I am undertaking a 5 day cycle challenge in Spain this September,

I am cycling from Granada to Seville which is a total distance of 387 Kilometers.

Day 1 – Tuesday 13 September 2011

Granada – Loja 85kms approx.

We set off through the old city of Granada, its skyline dominated by the majestic Alhambra Palace. This monument is the stuff of fairytales with its simple, unadorned fortress and towers set amongst beautiful gardens. After around 1 km we encounter the toughest hill of the ride which will make sure we are properly awake. Once out of the city we head west through rolling countryside, white washed villages and olive groves, for Loja to overnight.

Day 2 – Wednesday 14 September 2011

Loja – Reservoir De Iznajar – Lucena 83kms approx. (14kms off road)

From Loja we head north to Lucena on the edge of the Sierra Subbetica National Park. The most characteristic features of this area are the beautiful limestone rock formations. We approach the Iznajar Reservoir and just before its banks head off road around the reservoir towards its dam. We continue on tarmac roads towards Lucena, the regional capital of the province of Cordoba.

Day 3 – Thursday 15 September 2011

Lucena – Cabra – Castro Del Rio – Cordoba 79kms approx.

As we head towards Cordoba the terrain begins to flatten out with vineyards as far as the eye can see. We cycle through Cabra, a pretty old town with some fine monuments including a castle which is now a college of a religious order. We continue on through more vineyards and olive groves towards Castro Del Rio. From there we ride past wide cotton fields to Cordoba, our final destination for the day. Standing on a sweep of the Rio Guadalquivir with countryside stretching far in every direction around, Cordoba is one of the most historic cities in Spain. Remains of civilisation in the city have been found dating back to the 3rd Century BC. Today it has both a provincial and sophisticated atmosphere. Its old quarter is a fascinating labyrinth of narrow streets just waiting to be explored.

Day 4 – Friday 16 September 2011

Cordoba – Palma del Rio 60kms approx.

We leave Cordoba and cycle through the Guadalquivir Valley towards Palma del Rio with the slopes of the Sierra Morena to our right and farmlands to our left. We pass through Almodovar del Rio, a small town lying in the shadow of a superb 14th century Gothic castle. We continue cycling along the river through small villages until we reach Palma del Rio.

Day 5 – Saturday 17 September 2011

Palma del Rio – Seville 80kms approx.

We continue to follow the Rio Guadalquivir through farmlands and rural villages this time all the way to our final destination – Seville, capital of Andalucia. It is a fascinating city whose people, streets and buildings have been the inspiration for great novelists, painters and musicians.
