Story
Almost two million people in the UK are living with sight loss that has a significant impact on their daily lives. Of those, around 180,000 rarely leave their homes alone and lead lonely, isolated lives. Guide Dogs works for a world where people with sight loss are never left out of life, for a world where being blind or partially sighted is not what defines you. A world with enough support to make the challenges of sight loss no barrier to fulfilling hopes and dreams.
I LOVE walking and often cannot wait to escape from my duties, stretch those leg muscles and get some fresh air. Whilst on my strolls, I have often thought how much we rely on our sight, take it for granted and sometimes don’t fully appreciate how precious it is to us.
I’ve seen many, many posts recently of beautiful sunsets, stunning mountain top views, gorgeous blossoming flowers, trickling streams, gushing waterfalls, luscious woodlands, wild swimming in blue lagoons and mountain lakes, exhilarating canoeing and kayaking expeditions, paddle-boarding, downhill biking and pictures of people enjoying many other wonderful outdoor activities. I admit, I too have taken many photos myself, as I truly love being out and about, going on my adventures. I feel very lucky to live in the stunning top corner of North Wales that allows me to do so, access some beautiful jaw dropping locations, appreciate them and share them with others on social media.
Now I ask you this….and have a think about it...when YOU are out on your adventures, how did you get to these amazing places and how easy was it for you? Did you just set off down the lane, jump on the bike, in the car or your van and whizz off out there?
Imagine if you were blind or partially sighted………. your other senses would be highly attuned – the smells, the sounds, the feeling, the touch, the temperatures, the breeze, the wind, the moisture, the taste and it would also be an adventure ….BUT….. how would you get to these awesome places and explore safely?
You would most likely need some help right? Many of us forget and take for granted the simplicity of being able to go out into the world unaided.
Starting today 24th May 2021, our aim is to walk over 50,000 steps for the next 7 days. OK I know this target might seem very minimal to some however we are trying to do this whilst fitting around our busy lives, work, children, and other commitments. If we can do more ‘steps’ we will certainly try our very best! If you can spare some money to sponsor us to help raise funds for this awesome charity that would be amazing! Thank You Xx
Please do feel free to follow us throughout the week, and see where we have been walking our socks off!
