It's one of the first thing people notice about me, I have a limp. I have mild Cerebral Palsy. In many cases I am lucky, I am able to live independently, have a job, have a circle of friends, and of course throw darts. Many aren’t as lucky, for example a boy in my neighborhood he also has Cerebral Palsy but its more severe for him. He has a wheelchair and communicates through a computer. So in that way I am lucky.

I am also lucky because I was referred to the Shriners Children Hospital in the Twin Cities as a child. Throughout my childhood I was referred to Shriners 4 times for surgeries, each surgery ranging in severity from heel cord surgeries, stainless steel pins and plates in my hips and quad muscle surgeries to name a few. Most of my childhood wasn't spent on a bicycle or playing baseball but rather recovering from a surgery.

Shriners Children Hospitals provide orthopedic services and surgeries to children under the age of 18 at no cost to the families. My family never received a bill from my surgeries. Each surgery consisted of at least a week of inpatient care and rehab. Rehab was always physical therapy of 3 times a day for at least 1 week. In short I was learning to walk again. Shriners Hospital relies on donations from Shrine Temples, and fundraising but most importantly from donations.
