Story
Finlay’s Dumfries and Galloway Cycle Challenge...
Lockdown during the COVID-19 pandemic has been a difficult time for us all in one way or another, affecting all of our lives. Things are changing fast and many of us are worrying about what it all means for ourselves and for our loved ones. Those of us already living with mental health problems are facing extra challenges too.
Almost half of all adults have reported deterioration in their wellbeing and increased levels of anxiety. Suicides in the UK have increased 200% over the last 3 months, access to support has been challenging for those needing help.
Charities offering support have also suffered significantly, with a reduction in volunteers and fundraising.
Isolation from normal support structures, family and friends is particularly difficult when trying to cope with or overcome any bereavement or significant loss during this time.
It would have been Finlay’s little brother Rory’s (and Toby’s big brother) 3rd birthday in August. The loss of a baby, or a loved one is completely unimaginable without our closest friends and family around for support. Finlay is keen to raise money to support and raise awareness during this extremely difficult time.
We have chosen two charities to raise money for which will benefit greatly from your kind support:
C U Thru, which is a branch of Support in Mind Scotland is an early intervention project in Dumfries & Galloway for 16-30 year olds experiencing mental ill health. They aim to support and rebuild your confidence and self-esteem and feel more able to make positive decisions to improve quality of life.
Sands (Stillbirth and neonatal death charity) provide free support to anyone affected by the loss of a baby through a national helpline, forum and network of support groups. They train thousands of Health care staff so that they can support and care for families following the loss of a baby. Sands also promote and fund research to better understand causes, and save babies' lives.
The Challenge:
During the months of July and August, Finlay will cycle 300 miles (a big challenge for his little legs). He is very excited about cycling along with his Dad or Auntie Sharon (apparently I’d slow him down).
Finlay really appreciates all your support, in raising awareness of and much needed funding for the above charities.
