Story

Thanks for taking the time to visit my JustGiving page.

I am 16 years old and have just passed through my Board exams in Nepal and am now starting my A Levels.  I am a keen BMX cyclist and I am eager to get involved in social work too.

I felt motivated to combine these two interests and do something worthwhile to benefit local children in Nepal and therefore I will be raising money for Naxal Orphanage in Kathmandu by taking part in a 'Kora' Charity Challenge.  In Buddhism, a 'Kora' is a pilgrimage or journey around a sacred site.  this challenge will involve a 50-kilometre bike ride around Swayambhuath and Bodhnath, two important stupas (Buddhist places of worship) in the Kathmandu Valley.

The Organisation for Community, Child and Environment Development (OCCED) was established in 1999 to care and campaign for Nepal's most vulnerable children.  Maxal Orphanage is one of three run by OCCED and is located just over a kilometre from the centre of Kathmandu.  The organisation provides shelter, education and training for orphaned children while trying to find them new homes; at Naxal there are currently 50 children receiving care, about half of whom are babies or toddlers.  Many have been left on the doorstep by parents or family, while others have been found wandering the streets and taken into the orphanage by police.

The children live in clean but basic and crowded dormitories.  There is a creche to care for up to 15 babies and a pre-school class for two to four year olds, usually attended by around 20.  The older children attend a nearby school and return to Naxal late in the afternoon.

The procees I raise will go to support a new building project that Naxal Orphanage is currently working on.  Money raised would help to make such a difference to so many children, so please sponsor me if you can - every peny makes a difference.
