About Us:

The School of Justice at University of Central Lancashire is pleased to announce its 'Support Justice' charity fundraising initiative. Every year, we will be nominating a charity or initiative which we will be supporting for the whole academic year.

For the remainder of the '21/22 academic year, and for all of the '22/23 academic year we will be supporting the Shingwa School, near Mpongwe in Zambia. We will be doing this supported by The Zambia Society Trust.

The Shingwa School:

When the Shingwa School originally opened, it had 250 pupils and 5 classrooms.  Since then, the number of pupils has more than doubled to just over 600.  However, no extra classrooms have been built due to the lack of government funding. Current pupils can only attend for around two and a half hours of learning each day, as the different classes have to attend in separate shifts so that they can take turns to study in the existing classrooms.

New three classroom block project:

Four years ago, parents of pupils in the school decided to build a new three-classroom block. Every parent was asked to contribute some money to the fund. Local supporters of the school also donated some money and others offered to work on the project for free.

However, the limited funds that were collected have been exhausted through completing the foundations for the new classroom block. The project has been at a standstill for the past three years. The covid epidemic has sadly diminished the prospect of continuing with the project, in any capacity, in the near future.

The projects completion would help to resolve the current shortage of classrooms in the school so that the pupils can learn for longer each day.  It is also hoped that the new classrooms might enable to school to become a combined school which can offer both high school and primary level education to local children.

UCLan's School of Justice mission:

The 'Support Justice' fundraising committee has been genuinely touched by the positive outlook, resilience and determination to succeed of all children and staff at the Shingwa School. Despite experiencing a level of poverty unimaginable to most of us, the children never give up - and we are committed to showing them that they have not been given up on.  The estimated cost to finish the new classroom block is circa £20,000. This will build up from the existing foundations, and complete the basic build. Walls, a roof, doors and windows is how far this money will take us. To the pupils at Shingwa School, even to get this far seems like something out of a fantasy story, but we are determined to provide this most basic of amenity for them, with your kind support.

"Education is a human right with immense power to transform. On its foundation rest the cornerstones of freedom, democracy and sustainable human development." - Kofi Annan.
