Story
Turn back the clocks, it's 2015...... The year our beloved Mum and Nana moved from her own home of 50+years, to be cared for by the wonderful staff at Rosevale, York. Devastating for both her and us, but honestly it was the only way we felt she would be safe. The previous months leading up to this were heartbreaking for us all as a family. To watch the deterioration of someone, our 'Matriarch', that has held you in their arms, wiped away your tears, lent you money, given wise advice, hosted countless parties and family get-togethers, stuffed your face with chocolates, chipsticks and the odd brandy from time to time and having always been there and shown us so much love, was agony. We all visited regularly, making sure she didn't go a day without one of us being there with her, making her room look nice, doing her hair, painting her nails, all the things she always enjoyed. That and the odd trip to the pub for half a lager!
But the deterioration became more noticeable, particularly in 2016. Almost every time we went, there was a change. The events that lead up to 10th August 2016, are personal and private to us as a family and to Sheila, but all we can say is that it was heartbreaking.
We lost our dear Mum and Nana on 10th August 2016, where she had family with her, some via facetime!! ( Well, it is the 21st Century). It's almost laughable now! She slipped away from us peacefully to be back with her dear husband 'Eric', aka 'Eric Bloodaxe'!
In memory of her, as a family, we wanted to do something pro-active to assist in raising the awareness of Dementia, to help the invaluable work the Alzheimer's Society do and allow people to be able to know how they can assist relatives, friends and the general public in helping people living with Dementia and to make their lives fuller and longer.
Thank-you for reading our story and here's to the beginning of our fundraising journey.....................................................
