Story

Thanks for taking the time to visit my JustGiving page.

My husband Barry was diagnosed with metastatic head and neck cancer in March 2016. Following extensive surgery in April 2016 we first came into contact with St Richards Palliative care specialist nurse who helped enormously with her care, compassion, knowledge and helped get symptoms under control as well as access to disabled badge and benefits. She was a vital link between our GP, hospital and palliative care consultant which took a lot of the stress out of a very difficult time. For the next year he had regular chemotherapy, scans and appointments.

In August 2017 Barry deteriorated and was admitted to Worcester Hospital where he had radiotherapy but continued to deteriorate so was transferred to St Richards Hospice In-patient facility. where he passed away after five days but we both received such exceptional compassionate care in beautiful, calming surroundings. Being able to visit at any time and stay overnight was invaluable as was their care of relatives. Being involved in decisions about his care and being able to take part was comforting and supportive.

St Richards is an independent registered charity and it costs £8.4m (2017/18) a year to run its services. Three quarters of their income is through public donations, charitable events etc.. and the remaining of funding is from the NHS. Each year St Richards cares for around 3,000 patients with a wide range of life limiting illnesses both in the community and within its in-patient facility. Barry had to wait a couple of days before being able to transfer to St Richards and they are currently fund-raising to expand their services as demand continues to grow as people become aware of their excellent services.

Having experienced the fantastic services of St Richards I wish to help with their fundraising so more people can benefit from their care.

Thank you for your support with my fund raising Loop the Loop challenge on Saturday10th February. It should last approximately half an hour and will be an aerobatic flight in a small 2-seater plane which will be climbing, diving, rolling and looping the loop!
