Story
Sheila Newman was a lifelong campaigner for equality and social justice. She led a life of public service. She was an active local Labour Councillor for Chorlton, a school governor, lead member for Children's Services for Manchester City Council and since November 2017, Manchester's Lady Mayoress. She was a loving wife to Eddy and an inspirational and brilliant mum to her three daughters, Naomi, Ruth and Sarah.
She died suddenly on the morning of Monday 19th February. We have received so many kind messages showing the love and respect people held for Sheila and the difference she made in the community. These have been a great comfort in this very sad time. Instead of flowers, we would welcome donations to BookTrust.
We are raising money for BookTrust as this is a cause Sheila donated to for their Christmas appeal. BookTrust inspires a love of reading, particularly helping children and families who need extra support. We feel this honours Sheila's lifelong love of reading and her dedication to improving the lives and well-being of children, especially those who have not been given the advantages of others.
