Story
SpecialEffect enables severely disabled people to use technology in any way possible – using whichever part(s) of their body that work best – by adapting tech to their individual needs. It’s so important they can join in with family/ friends, to be included and not left out. This can hugely benefit mental well-being, self-esteem and quality of life -and much needed FUN!
They specialise in Eye Control Technology. Imagine: You wake up after an accident. You can’t move anything except your eyes. You can’t speak. Through eye-movement alone, we help people operate a computer so they can communicate and regain a little independence – giving them a voice when they don’t have one of their own.
The Twin Town challenge, which was first established in 2014, will this year see 100 cars take part in a series of points-based challenges whilst driving from Blenheim Place to Le Touquet (and back again) over the course of the Bank Holiday weekend. The theme this year is ‘Battle of the Bands’ and each car should not have been bought for more than £500. We have transformed a 2002 Chrysler PT Cruiser and will appear this Friday as a quintet of Elton John’s!
Two of our colleagues, Peter O’Connell and Nik Ioannidis, will be cycling the 216 mile outbound trip to Le Touquet. Where as Sarah Gardener, Steve Neal and Hayley Simmons will be making the journey by car.
The charity continues to remain close to our hearts; the 2018 weekend was most of the most inclusive and rewarding yet humbling things that we have had the pleasure to be a part of. We raised over £5,000 in 2018 and only want to better this in 2022, with total fundraising from the Challenge now exceeding £1Million since 2014.
