Story

Hi,

Thank you so much for taking the time to visit my JustGiving page.

I am running a half marathon at Milton Keynes on the 7th March 2010 and i have decided to raise sponsorship and awareness for Leukemia Research.

Why have I chosen to raise money for Leukemia Research?

Leukemia is such a prevelant disease that cuts short lives of so many people. I want to be able to contribute to researching the cause and treatments of leukemia, and enhance the quality of life of those who are unfortunate to develop Leukemia. Also to give individuals and their loved ones hope during such a heartbreaking time.

Twenty One years ago my grandad died at the age of 60 of Acute Myelogenous Leukemia. He battled this awful disease for two years and after having two bone marrow transplants and a lot of chemo he was then told there was nothing more they could do for him. Consiquently i missed out on doing all the things a grandad would normally do with a young grandaughter.

A very good friend of mine's close friend has been battling Leukemia now for a long time. He has had extensive chemo to kill the Leukemia and after a long wait finally found a match and had a bone marrow transplant. At the end of last year he was in remission, unfortuantly the chemo did not kill all the Leukemia and he has now been told there is nothing more they can do for him, he is in his late twenties!!! Unfortuantly on the 14th Febuary 2010  Travis passed away after a long battle with Leukemia. His Family are in our thoughts and your help can help stop another family going though such a heartbreaking time.

To add a bizzarre twist to the story. I had already started raising money for Leukeamia Reserch, then a few weeks later my family had that dreaded news that my Dad has Blood cancer (Lymphomia). We have a long and tough road ahead of us as a family but by other peoples  amazing donations of blood, marrow and research there is light at the end of this tunnel. We will fight hard as a family to ensure my dad recovers from Lymphomia and to increase the awareness of this prevelant disease.

"GIVE HOPE" to people who have been touched in someway with Leukemia by digging deep and donating to Leukemia Research. Please dont forget they also need people to register to Donate Bone Marrow and Blood.

What is Leukemia?

Leukemia is a malignant disease (cancer) of the bone marrow and blood. It is characterized by the uncontrolled accumulation of blood cells. Leukemia is categorized into four types: myelogenous or lymphocytic, each of which can be acute or chronic. The terms myelogenous or lymphocytic denote the cell type involved. Thus, the four major types of leukemia are:

    - Acute Lymphocytic Leukemia
    - Chronic Lymphocytic Leukemia
    - Acute Myelogenous Leukemia
    - Chronic Myelogenous Leukemia
Acute leukemia is a rapidly progressing disease that results in the accumulation of immature, functionless cells in the marrow and blood. The marrow often stops producing enough normal red cells, white cells and platelets. Anemia, a deficiency of red cells, develops in virtually all persons with leukemia.

Chronic leukemia progresses more slowly and allows greater numbers of more mature, functional cells to be made.

How your donations will Benifit Leukemia Research

Leukemia Reserch is the UK's leading blood cancer research charity. There work touches the lives of the 110,000 people in the UK who are living with blood cancer. Each year Leukemia Research commits more than £20 million pounds  to research and clinical trials across the country.

Leukemia Reserch has four main goals:

- To discover the causes of blood cancers.

- To understand how blood cells become cancerous.

- To refine diagnostic methods for the rapid and accurate assessment of these diseases.

- To devise new treatments for blood cancer patients and improve their quality of life.

Leukemia research needs £120 million over the next five years to continue there life-saving research into better diagnostics, treatments and cures for all of those with blood cancer
