Story
When you read on you may see familiar text. This is because we were planning to do the trek last year but Jeremy was diagnosed with colorectal cancer 2 weeks before the trek was due to commence. Now recovered the plan has been resurrected. This years trek is dedicated also to Jeremy’s father who passed away in August this year
Jeremy has supported MDA since 1974 when he signed up as a "friend of MDA UK". We both got more involved in 1995 picking up the baton after Jeremy's Mother passed away. She was very active in the Sheffield committee.
Things really took off in 1999 when we both joined the Hale committee and quickly raised the money for an Ambulance. This was the first of the many projects we have actively raised funds for as members and, since 2008, chair of the Manchester committee.
Having completed our part in funding the building of the new blood centre and logistics hub in Ramle we are taking part physically in a journey to approach Aqaba from the north. Inspired by Lawrence of Arabia who famously said "Aqaba is over there. It's only a matter of going". We are donning our hiking gear and participating in this year's trek.
We start in Jordan with the Red Crescent operation in Amman (Mohammed Haddad who, as president of this organisation spoke in our house earlier this year on the benefits both they and MDA gain from cooperative activities) will be hosting us. We will visit a camp for Syrian refugees where MDA is providing medical assistance. (https://www.jewishnews.co.uk/special-report-we-want-to-live-there-is-no-life-here/)
Then we will take in Petra and Wadi Rum before heading for Aqaba (Path to Aqaba - YouTube).
After this we will be crossing into Israel, working a shift on the ambulances from Eilat station where we will gain an appreciation of how much this will be improved by the funds we raise. Then heading north through the Negev to Mitzpe Ramon (We promise not to blow up any railway lines) and exploring the Ramon Crater before concluding our trip in Tel Aviv for Shabbat and Ramle to see the results of our previous efforts.
Of course as I mentioned earlier the above describes last years trek. This year we are starting in northern Israel on 5th November and finishing in Aqaba on 12th.
