Who is doing this run & donation collection?
Hi there,
I am Shani Ram du Sautoy, 39 years old, female, ex designer, (hopefully) psychologist to be, mother of 3. Most of you who will get to this page know me.
However, I want to tell you WHY I chose to run this great north run (13 miles) half marathon for Voice. A charity which helps young people in care, young people with mental health problems, and young refugees.
For those of you who know the story, skip over.
When I was 16 months old, back in December 1968, My biological father, Betzalel Ram passed away in a tragic diving accident during his military service in Israel. My mum remarried soon after to a Dutch man, my great step-father Jos. They were both caring and loving parents (and still are), however, because of various reasons they never told me that Jos is not my real dad. I grew up visiting my biological grandparents, but they were not allowed to tell me about my deceased father. So I was sort of “mini schizophrenic”, knowing and not knowing about my routs. I knew, but I also knew I was not allowed to know, parent’s are kids main authority and window to the “truth” so I was not sure weather I am imagining this other father story or what. Only at 16.5 years of age, when I applied for my identity card 9compulsery in Israel) I found out my real surname. (My step-dad was not allowed to adopt me officially in Israel because he is not Jewish. Israel is a racist country but this is a whole other story all together). So at that point in my life, I went through a major crisis. I hated my parents for not telling me “the truth” and had a serious break of trust with them. Luckily, we all managed to cross those hard 7 years. I think I only truly emerged from them thanks to a wonderful clinical psychologist whom I saw for two years, Yafa Ziv Av. I was also lucky to meet a fantastic partner, (see in the photo, he is still there, Marcus).
So this is my story about a difficult teenage period. I was lucky. I always had a roof over my head, and someone who listened to my “issues”.
Some teenagers are not that lucky.
You might not have experienced a dramatic story as mine, or as some of the young people that voice supports, but I am sure you remember the confusion, spots, self questioning and other issues which make those years so hard to cross.
Please help me to donate to Voice and to do my run this coming Sunday successfully.
Many thanks and very best wishes for a good, healthy and happy new jewish year.
Shani

How did it go?
I did the run in 2 hours and 39 minutes. I daydreamed for 9 miles and than decided to sweat a little during the last 4 miles. It was a fun experience. The New Castle locals were extremely friendly. They offered us sweets, ice lollies, biscuits and all kids wanted to have a “five”. (and I gave them all a five indeed). The difficulty was driving up (nearly 7 hours) and …getting out of there. The metro back to the centre of town was with a 2 hours queue and than driving out was impossible.. We had to take a hotel room for another night.
The following day, Monday was Yom Kippur, a fasting day, so driving down for 5 hours from 7 am till 12, rushing to university, and having a large meal to end the fast with friends made a third rather full day. Nevertheless, it was all fantastic. Thanks so much to all your donations!. Shani.
