Story

How do I start this... January 11, 2021 was a significant day for us, after an hour of close observation, where my son had to complete a number of individual tasks, we were told by professionals that our son had a diagnosis of moderate autism. I'd heard of autism, read stories about it, and think I may even had come across people that had the condition, but I never took it in like I did that day. When we were told he had autism, I automatically went into 'action' mode:

  • How can we get over this hill?
  • Let's start doing things now
  • Let's throw money at the situation

But it took me a while to comprehend how it affected me, putting a label of 'autism' on my son. It was, and still is, difficult to sometimes say it, or tell others when they ask about my children. But I'm getting better at it. Largely in part to the National Autism Society, and the work they carry out.

For parents who first hear those words about their child, it can bring about a mix of emotions, centered around two words: 'Why me?' You immediately compare your kids, whether you realise or not, to other kids of a similar age, try to push what you think your child can/ should achieve, and making excuses when they don't. What was one of the biggest helps was getting an invitation to the Autism Show in June 2022. I got an opportunity to listen to talks from younger and older adults who have autism and how they have overcome their challenges, as well as meet other parents who are experiencing the same thoughts and feelings as myself. This was a great help, and when I got an opportunity to do raise money through a half-marathon. I literally jumped at the chance.

So I do this run, not only in support of my amazing son, but also for all the other children, parents and adults who are going through some form of experience with autism, whether new or old. The work the National Autisic Society do, is truly life changing,  and will help to support children and adults long into the future.

This will be the longest run I've ever done, so if you most definitetly want to see me get over the finish line, please donate as little or as much as you like. It will be truly, truly appreciated, by me and my belly!
