Event: Jumpstart my Service Year 2023, from 1 June 2023 to 1 June 2024
Jumpstart My Service Year is JVC Northwest's campaign that allows friends and family to show their support for loved ones as they go off to become Jesuit Volunteers.

Story

Jumpstart the Seattle JVs! These volunteers have dedicated a year of their lives to serve with JVC Northwest. As such, they have committed to living the four values of Community, Simple Living, Social & Ecological Justice, and Spirituality/Reflection. Your gift goes into a communal pool which helps support their formation and keep fees low for the nonprofits they serve. Help them reach their goal of receiving at least 27 donations of any amount to their page.

Meet the Seattle JVs:

Araceli (she/her) is from Bellingham, WA and will be serving as a VAWA Legal Coordinator with the Northwest Immigrant Rights Project.

Cambri is from Pekin, IL and will be serving as a Community Engagement Coordinator with Compass Housing Alliance.

Ben (he/him) is from Glen Lyon, PA and will be serving as an Activity Center Support Specialist with L'Arche Noah Sealth of Seattle.

"I serve because I hope to learn about others while learning more about myself. I hope to bring joy to my community and to those I serve. I would like to grow spiritually during my time with JVC Northwest."

Alec (he/him) is from East Rockaway, NY and will be serving as an Asylum Intake and Legal Coordinator with Low Income Housing Institute (LIHI).

"I serve because I want to help those who are seeking asylum receive the legal services and rights as asylum seekers they deserve. Article 14.1 of the Universal Declaration of Human Rights asserts that “Everyone has the right to seek and to enjoy in other countries asylum from persecution,” and Asylum Seekers, refugees, and migrants are protected by International Law set out in binding treaties like the 1951 Refugee Convention and its 1967 Protocol Relating to the Status of Refugees, to which the United States is a signatory. I hope that my service will protect and fulfill the rights of asylum seekers."

Tan (they/them) is from Addison, IL and will be serving as a Tiny House Village Essential Needs Coordinator with Low Income Housing Institute (LIHI).

"I serve because there is too much strife in the world to devote my privilege and power towards anything else."

Tess (she/her) is from Mason, OH and will be serving as a Day Treatment Volunteer/Case Aid with Community House Mental Health Agency.

"I serve because of the people I get to know in my community and my passion to support our overall shared wellness. Through authentic connection, I hope to learn how my fellow community members can access and be better empowered by care. Each person has a story and deserves to be heard."

Bekah (she/her) is from Nashville, TN and will be serving as a Service Learning and Volunteer Coordinator with St. Therese Catholic Academy.

"I serve because I want to live for others. Serving helps me to understand the world and other people more deeply by prioritizing the needs of others over my own and broadening my experiences."

Ed (he/him) is from Edgewater, MD and will be serving as a Sustainability and Education Coordinator with Interim Community Development Association.

"I serve because it allows me to connect with people from various walks of life and engage in conversations and actions that bring change. Serving alongside individuals with similar goals to promote and empower the well-being of marginalized groups can help generate the change we wish and need to see."

Shannon (she/her) is from Cranston, RI and will be serving as Student and Classroom Academic Support with St. Therese Catholic Academy.

"I serve because I want to make broader connections with my community to ensure a more equitable future for everyone."

Aidan (she/her) is from Missoula, MT and will be serving as a Day Treatment Support/Group Facilitator with Community House Mental Health Agency.

"I serve because where I have been fortunate enough to receive care others have not. I strive to create positive change through service on any level."
