Story

Thanks for taking the time to visit my JustGiving page.

"CANCER" - A horrible word, a horrible disease and the older I get the more I hear of it, the more prominent it seems, as we all know someone who is affected by it.

I have ridden Lands End to John o Groats twice before and on both occasions I have been part of a team that has raised money because during my life or a team members life we have been affected by the selected charity, either directly or indirectly. This will be my final Lands End to John o Groats and I will be riding it alone, a very different challenge than ever before both physically and mentally - But I will succeed, I am made to adapt and overcome and in the end I will have personal achievement but ultimately the Dougie Mac will benefit financially.

"WHY" Douglas MacMillan Hospice?  For me, a number of reasons -

Firstly, My wonderful & beautiful mum sadly passed away in February this year, in her final weeks, the Douglas MacMillan Hospice provided excellent care for my mum and also us as a family, the care and compassion the staff at Dougie Mac demonstrated was second to none and we should all cherish this hospice in our local community - I cannot put into words the loss I feel and even now as I write this I am still in disbelief, I want to ride the 1000 miles from Lands end to John O Groats in homage to a great woman who made me the person I am today, with my Brother in support we can move mountains for mum.

Secondly, I had a close personal friend who suffered with cancer and without him the first two events would never have succeeded, Nigel provided support for both events and gave up fifteen days of his time away from his young family to help us in our efforts - a very testing and difficult job at times - but those fifteen days, right now, I wish I could just hand them back to him to spend with his family - "Time" is something that is precious and something that we all take for granted, and for that my final ride will also honour Nigel Colclough an upstanding gentleman who was resolute and dignified throughout his illness, a man amongst men who was my support, my work colleague and my friend.

Lastly, Douglas MacMillan Hospice provides remarkable care and support, which I feel is more important to help cancer sufferers and their families - I know the output of our efforts will be greatly utilised, a visible outcome, something I can be proud of, something we all can be proud of and something we may be in need of one day - as no one is immune to this disease.

It costs £11 million a year to operate Douglas MacMillan Hospice and I want to raise £10,000 from this event and continue for as long as I can to support the hospice.

Please Please support my own efforts to realise my overall target of £10,000 and make a difference for so many people and their families.

Many thanks,

Sean Yates
