Fundraising for Kidney Research UK
Thank you so much for taking time out to view my page, I will try my best to sum up my reasons for taking on 12 challenges in 12 months and why I am aiming to raise £3000 for Kidney Research UK. (In as few words as possible before you all get too bored of reading this!)
As some of you know, my mum had a successful Kidney transplant over 18 years ago after many years of dialysis and hospital treatments. For my mum and my family, being in hospital was a huge part of my childhood until we finally got the goodnews that would give my mum a new lease of life. During the next 18 years, it's safe to say that I always just assumed my mum was going to be fit and healthy for the rest of her life after her transplant and lead as normal a lifestyle as possible.
However over the last few years we have had a number of health scares that have really made me realise that I (and probably many others) take my family’s health for granted and often act quite selfishly. Over the last few months, my mum (or moomin as she is better known) has spent a prolonged period of time in a French hospital with multiple problems that are related to her kidneys. Being in another country and unable to be there for my mum has been one of the hardest things I've ever had to do and not something that I would wish on anyone else.Everything I was saying and doing seemed insignificant and days and weeks seemed to blur into one big nightmare. Luckily she has pulled through (because she's a genetic freak according to the hospital) however I know other families and friends who maybe aren't as luckily as we have been and I don't even want to imagine how that must feel.
All of the above has really put it into perspective how short and cruel life can be to all of us and how little I could help or be there for my mum. And although I'm not there by her side there are countless nurses, doctors, paramedics, dinner ladies, physios and researchers dedicating their lives to helping people like my mum, and although I will never be able to show all these amazing people how grateful I am, I hope by taking on 12 running, cycling and swimming challenges over 12 months in 2016 and raising money for Kidney Research UK, I can hopefully make my mum and all these heroes proud of me.
I have previously done one 10k and a half marathon but I'm determined to push myself by taking on the following events. The reason for picking a mix of events is because my two brothers (Ellis and Liam) and my sister (lala) will be joining me for tough mudder and one half Marathon event!
· Victoria Park Half Marathon
· Greater Manchester Marathon
· Run Hackney Half
· North London Half
· Windsor Half (with Jade and Liam)
· Amsterdam Marathon
· Outlaw half (half iron man)
· London Marathon
· Bear Grylls Obstacle race
. Norwich to London Bike ride (Jon and Liam)
· Ride London 100
· 650 mile France bike ride
Addition 12 events
Zone 1-3 every tube stop cycle ride
. 5 marathons in 5 days
. Great North Run
. Royal Parks
. Amsterdam Marathon
. Ultra white collar boxing
. 2 x Marathons TBC
For the majority of my close friends, you will be pleased to know that I will be in incredible amounts of pain/discomfort throughout each event and will at some point 'lose my head' which I hope will encourage you to donate. I am also a terrible swimmer so will have to learn how to swim properly ahead of my 1.2 open water swim as part of outlaw!
Wish me luck and thank you so much for taking the time to read this and hopefully donating to what is a fantastic cause.
Cheers
