We breed and train guide dogs to give blind people freedom and mobility

Story

We are walking 10 miles across Edinburgh on Saturday 15th April 2023, calling in at our funeral offices as we go.

We want to help Guide Dogs fulfil their ambition that every person with sight loss has the confidence and support they need to live their lives to the full.

Almost two million people in the UK are living with sight loss that has a significant impact on their daily lives. Of those, around 180,000 rarely leave their homes alone and lead lonely, isolated lives. Guide Dogs works for a world where people with sight loss are never left out of life, for a world where being blind or partially sighted is not what defines you. A world with enough support to make the challenges of sight loss no barrier to fulfilling hopes and dreams.

Monies raised by Scotmid will fund guide dog puppies plus the training of habilitation and mobility practitioners. These specialists provide one-to-one support for people with sight loss, helping them to understand and safely navigate the world around them. Guide Dogs and Scotmid will support people, with a vision impairment and their families, to live the life they choose.

The ability to get around is vital in order to live a full life yet thousands of people with sight loss never leave home alone. We empower visually impaired people to do that and rely on the support of the public to fund the guide dog service.
