Story
I will be trekking 100km through the Wadi Rum/Jordan in order to raise vital funds for all the brave little stars - like Sasha, who are affected by T1.
This is Sasha's letter to Diabetes:
"Walking on Ice"
I stepped on ice when I was 10. I wish I hadn't. It was hard, I was scared, I was lonely. The ice was getting thinner and thinner. It started to even shake sometimes, but I told myself I wouldn't fall through the ice. Sometimes I slipped, sometimes I fell but I always got back up again. I realised that I wasn't alone. There were ice skaters just like me. When we struggled we helped each other up. With all the difficulties I learnt to find strength and independence. At times the ice got thicker. I walked as I was walking on the street. You only have one life to live so make the best of it. And I did! Sadly the ice never ends, so I just have to enjoy the scenery I guess. If one more person says it is like brushing your teeth they have another thing coming, because you know what? It is like walking on Ice!
Type 1 diabetes is a life threatening and lifelong autoimmune condition.
The Sugarplum Sahara Trek - 13th to 19th November 2021: 100km trying to raise £100k to mark 100 years of insulin. 2021 marks 100 years since the discovery of insulin, one of the greatest medical break-throughs in history. Our team will be embarking on this 100km challenge with the aim to raise £100k for JDRF, the type 1 diabetes charity."Just as important as raising funds to help find the cure for type 1 diabetes, is raising awareness about this unrelenting condition and acting as a mouthpiece for those who are too little to shout about it themselves." Sugarplum Children was founded by Jubie Wigan in 2013 after her daughter Aliena was diagnosed with type 1 diabetes at the age of just two. Sugarplum Children passionately fundraises for JDRF, the world's leading type 1 diabetes research charity.
