Story
Hello!
In honour of my 3 year old son Max, who was diagnosed with Autism and Speech Disorder in April, I’ve managed to convince myself that this challenge is a good idea!
Before I became a special needs mum, I knew nothing about autism and the difficulties that come with it.
Fun Facts!
- Autism has no known cause or cure.
- The literal meaning of autism is "alone".
- Autism is one of the fastest-growing developmental disorders in the WORLD!
- Autism is more common than childhood cancer, diabetes, and AIDS combined.
- Autism is more common in boys than in girls. The ratio is about 4:1.
- In the U.K, the demand for autism assessments has increased five-fold since 2019 – The waiting time is now over a year!
- In the U.S, supporting an individual with autism costs a family $60,000 a year on average.
The reality is, everyday brings new heart-breaking stories of autistic people (children especially) being failed by the NHS.
Evidence shows, the sooner a child gets a diagnosis and access to therapies, the better.
All the money you’ve kindly donated will help NAS support families in ways that the NHS currently can’t.
I.e. speech therapy / occupational therapy / behavioural therapies / medications / parental respite – I could go on and on!
Despite the hardships (and lack of sleep OMG!), the autism community is AMAZING and I consider myself very lucky to have a Max in my life!
If you’re feeling generous, please donate to help raise awareness and create a society that works for autistic people. 😊
THANK YOU!!!!
