Story
We are supporter members of SARA Wyre forest and now that we have started training, we need to raise some money to pay for our kit in order to become operational crew members .
We are planning to walk from our crews HQ in Wyre forest, all the way down the River Severn to the SARA HQ in Beachley. We will be stopping at Upton, Tewkesbury, South Gloucester and Sharpness stations on the way, all over the August bank holiday weekend. Covering around 100 miles in total.
The Severn area rescue association are a land and water search & rescue charity with people willing to give up their work, family and friends at the drop of a hat to search and help people when they most need it. No matter what the time or weather they are out there helping to return people back to their loved ones.
SARA is the second largest volunteer search and rescue organisation in the country after the RNLI and a proud member of Mountain Rescue England and Wales.
SARA is entirely funded by donations and the proceeds of the
fund raising efforts of its members and supporters which must cover the
acquisition and running costs of boats (5), vehicles, safety and rescue
equipment such as helmets, torches, ropes, stretchers and first aid equipment, as well as the cost of running the stations at Wyre Forest, Upton-on-Severn, Tewkesbury,
Sharpness, Beachley and Newport. Approximately £130 -140k is required each
year. This does not include the volunteer’s basic personnel kit which they
provide themselves, nor the cost of training recruits in the various skills
required to be an operational member and ultimately take on specialist roles in
the team. Not surprisingly COVID has seriously disrupted fundraising efforts.
Every single penny counts and even just £1 will help us on our way to the target.
