Story
Thank you for checking out my JustGiving page. I’ll try and keep it short and sweet, I know you are all busy …
I will be cycling the length of the UK! That’s right, you didn’t mis-read.
In September 2022 I will be taking part in ‘Ride Across Britain’, starting at Land’s End and arriving 9 days later in John o’Groats. I will be riding to raise money for Prostate Cancer UK in memory of my Dad.
The challenge
To cycle from Land’s End to John o’Groats, that’s a total of 970 miles (1561km) and a whopping 52,507ft (16,004m) of climbing over 9 consecutive days.
Needless to say this enormous challenge will take a great deal of both physical and mental training and fortitude. Am I scared? You bet! But I have a huge motivator …
The cause
I am riding to raise money for Prostate Cancer UK and in memory of my Dad who tragically died in July 2021 as a result of metastatic prostate cancer. His story is one that is surprisingly common, diagnosed with Stage 4 (terminal) metastatic prostate cancer, at the time of diagnosis his only symptom was slight pain in his leg.
Prostate Cancer UK not only provide critical support to men with prostate cancer and their families and work to raise awareness of the risks of prostate cancer they also fund vital, life saving research with a mission for a future where lives are not limited by prostate cancer.
I am not a seasoned cyclist, at the point when I signed up I had dabbled at best. My Dad was a keen cyclist, many of my fondest childhood memories are on bike rides with him. He was passionate about cycling and derived great pleasure from it and undertook numerous endurance challenges on his bike but he never did Land's End to John o'Groats (LEJOG as its is known).
After he died I started contemplating what I wanted to do in his memory. I wanted it to be something that scared me, that was going to be a huge challenge and that honoured Dad in some way. The Ride Across Britain seemed to tick so many boxes it had to be done.
I have a looong way to go to be ready for this and I plan on keeping a training and fundraising log/blog which you can follow on Instagram @sarahs.two.wheeled.adventures
