Story

Coming from the Scottish Borders you would expect me to be an outdoorsy kind of girl; trekking up hills, cycling through the valleys, horse riding and partaking in rugby. Well… WRONG.

I have managed to spend my thirty something years doing very little exercise, except walking my dogs and getting thumb blisters from excessive use of the remote control.  Exercise and me don’t have a good history together.

At the age of 9 I broke my arm falling off a flying fox.  On day 6 of my year-long stay in Canada, I tried roller blading for the first time and broke my wrist.  Later on that year I fell victim to a spider bite whilst paintballing, resulting in the right side of my face swelling up to elephant man proportions.  Last year, whilst out skating with the boys from the Green Bamboo Shelter I fell and spent a few days with my arm in a sling.  Even dog walking is a dangerous sport for me.  One winter morning 5 years ago I managed to slip on a frozen puddle and break my other wrist!!  It appears it doesn’t just happen to old age pensioners.

What am I doing? In February I am taking part taking part in the H2H charity bike ride.  I will be cycling 2000km from Hanoi, in the north of Vietnam, to Ho Chi Minh City, in the south; up mountains, through paddy fields and meeting many locals along the way.  Please note that all cyclists will be covering their own expenses.

Why? Why not!!!  Apart from losing a few extra pounds and getting fit, we are aiming to raise at least $30, 000 for some of the poorest communities in Vietnam.

Where the money is going:  SCC was founded to help disadvantaged Vietnamese children to get an education and a fairer start in life. Its key activities include educational scholarships, building schools, vocational training and working with other like-minded organizations. Its area of operation is in the south of Vietnam, around HCMC, the Mekong Delta and extending to the Cambodian border.

Let’s just hope she makes it back to Ho Chi Minh City in one piece!  Thank God for padded shorts, gel seats and medical insurance

Thanks for your kind donations.
