Story
How many times have you wanted to pause the world?
Just stop everything for an hour? a day? a month?...…a year?
In my 47 years there have been two such moments in my life
Just before my daughter Florence's 2nd birthday she was diagnosed with Type 1 diabetes. Florence was in ketosis and holding my lifeless child in my arms whilst doctors raced to stop her going into a coma was terrifying. An hour later when she was out of the woods we were told she had type one diabetes and from that moment on we would have to give her insulin to keep her alive ….Our lives changed
Suddenly we were having to weigh out food, count the carbs in her food and work out insulin ratios and do finger prick blood sugar tests on her up to10 times a day. Following a seizure she had in the middle of the night due to extreme hypo she was given an insulin pump to better control her blood sugar levels, a task that I still find almost impossible to achieve whist still giving her a full and fun childhood.
I think from that moment she had that seizure I started to worry about Florence during the night - the time that I wasn't able to be there for her - The nights are certainly the worst for me. A few years ago my step brother died tragically - the second moment in my life that wanted to the world around me to stop.
I was woken in the night to this terrible news. Feeling that incredible pain of losing someone you love is unexplainable and I know that experiencing this has only heighted my fear of anything happening to my daughter.
8 Years on from her diagnosis we do the best we can. Florence is a a delight and I'm adamant that she has as normal a life as possible but I'm very aware that she struggles internally with everything she has to deal with as do I
So why are we doing this challenge? Well we have a crazy busy life. I have three children, two dogs and I run my own business. Life is very hectic - At the top of this 'story' I spoke about a wish to pause the world. Well I know we cant do this but maybe taking this time with my daughter to train in the fresh air and climb this mountain - will give us that 'pause moment' a time to reflect, to chat , to connect, to breathe........and whilst doing that also be able to raise money for this amazing charity working so hard to fund research into Type 1 diabetes for better control or even (fingers crossed) a cure.
We would be so happy if you could help us reach our target for JDRF and to give Flo and others the hope of a cure.
In return we will share our adventure with you.
