Part 1, 2x 5k runs each in aid of Harris Hospice
Sarah McGann and Becca Dennis
Since running our first 5k runs in 2013, we’ve got the bug and can’t wait to do it again. Maybe it’s to get the perfect physique that we picture in our minds but that is never reflected back to us in our mirrors. Maybe it’s to do something nice and raise money for charity. Maybe it’s something fun to do with friends that brings us closer together... Or maybe we just like the sense of achievement we get from crossing the finish line (and the medal at the end, I think we’re looking forward to collecting these the most). Whichever way you look at it, we had a ball and have decided to do it again next year. A lot.
In 2014 we will be running 50k. Each. Although not in one go (are you crazy?). 8x 5k fun runs, tough runs, charity runs, muddy runs, and messy paint colour runs. Then to finish, 1x 10k dressed as Santa Claus. We will be raising money for charity and have decided on four deserving charities to benefit from our moment of insanity. Harris Hospis, British Heart Foundation, Cancer Research UK and Dogs Trust.
For our first two runs, we will be supporting Harris Hospis – A very worthy local charity who looked after a friend’s terminally ill father before he sadly passed away. Harris Hospis aims to improve the quality of life of its patients through the provision of specialist palliative care, by supporting their families and carers and by supporting and educating fellow healthcare professionals.
We will be running the “Run Richmond Park 5k” race together on 1st March 2014.
Then, four weeks later on 29 March 2014 we will be joined by some of our closest friends, Terri-Ann-Marchant, Emilia Dyjas, Claire Coates and Stella Jones to run the “Tough 5k Greenwich Park run.”
1) We like quiet weekends. The ones where you wake up Saturday afternoon and don’t change out of your onesie until Sunday evening. We don’t like going out and are not one for any kind of physical exertion. This is going to be tough. Not good enough? There are more…
2)Most of these events start at 9am. That means we have to get up at stupid o’clock in the morning to get there. Still unconvinced? I’ve saved the best till last…
3) We’re taking this seriously and want to do well. The aim is that by the final 5k run,we would have broken the 30 minute barrier. In order to do so, I (Sarah) am giving up the one thing that makes me happy. Unfortunately I’ve already put a deposit down on the wedding so I’ll just have to give up the next best thing. Smoking. Cigarettes have been a huge part of my life since I was a teenager, comforting me though stressful times. What I learnt last year is just how out of shape I am and part of that is down to smoking. Plus you wouldn’t believe the dirty looks I got when smoking after the pretty muddy race for life run ;-). So as of 01/01/2014, goodbye cigarettes.
So please, we would be grateful for your support in any way. Whether you donate, come to support us and cheer us on, or even join in some of our races, here’s to 2014 and the year of getting healthy and giving back.
