Story
Our eldest son, Joshua was born prematurely at 32 weeks + (a very important) 2 days. It was completely unexpected, unplanned and to this day completely unexplained. The idea of having a premature baby had not even crossed our minds nor had it been discussed in any of my pre-natal care. We were therefore completely and utterly unprepared.
Luckily for us Joshua was born at a healthy (for his age) 4lb 8oz and thankfully he had no significant health issues. He spent a night in NICU followed by 4 weeks in the neonatal ward in hospital and is now a strong and thriving 9 year old who is still keeping us on our toes on a daily basis!
The early days of being the parent of a premie baby were some of the most challenging I have had to deal with as a parent. The days were long but they were nothing compared to the nights. Having to leave Joshua in hospital because there wasn’t room for me to stay with him broke my heart on a daily basis and the late night feeds without a baby in my arms are something I will never forget.
It was during this time that I was introduced to Bliss and the work they do. From supporting new parents and babies on the ground in NICU and neonatal wards up and down the country to funding valuable research projects that will help give future premature babies the best possible outcome and parents the support and answers they desperately need.
The rate of babies born premature or sick in the UK is rising with 1 in every 7 babies needing neonatal care. Bliss is continuing the fight to improve outcomes and quality of life for these babies and their parents and it is a privilege for me to be able to help support them with their important work.
I am SO proud to be the parent of a premature baby and I have taken on this huge challenge of running the London marathon to help raise vital funds for Bliss to continue to support all of the amazing premature and poorly babies of the future and their incredible parents. I run in celebration of their strength, resilience and their ability to not only survive but to thrive against the odds.
Any help you can give me to either achieve this ambitious fundraising target, to come for a run with me or cheer me along the way will be greatly appreciated.
Thanks so much for your support, wish me luck!
