Story
Thanks for taking the time to visit my JustGiving page.
My fiance's Grandma was diagnosed with Vascular Dementia in October 2008 and we are doing the Memory walk in her memory to help others who are affected by Alzheimer's Disease.
Dorothy was a wonderful mother and wife who always put her family first, nothing was too much trouble, always there with her beautiful smile and kind words of wisdom. She meant the world to all of us.
Her family decided from the very beginning that she would be cared for at home rather than in a residential/nursing home, and that's what we all did. It was hard, very hard but I don't regret our decision for one minute, although there was times when we thought we couldn't carry on any longer, her beautiful smile and sense of humor melted our hearts. She became a second grandma to me and I spent many hours enjoying her company.
Sadly the progression of the disease was slowly and painfully taking her away from us. She lost her smile because she no longer knew how to, she couldn't walk because she no longer knew how to, but the worst of it all was she no longer knew how to swallow. She went from a bubbly 10 stone to a very very thin 4 stone within months, and that was so hard to witness.
Sadly she passed away on 2nd January 2012 ,fortunately at home due to the support of her daughter Judy ,family and Marie Cure Carers (for when we all needed a little break).
I hope one day there will be a cure for this Cruel Wicked Disease.
Any donations, however small will be very welcome for such a worthy cause.
Thank You
Sarah
