Fundraising for Guy's & St. Thomas' Charity
Thanks for supporting me in this venture! By supporting this charity, you’ll be helping to fund new innovative approaches to clinical care, improving patient experience and supporting staff well-being.
Most of you will know I have run the marathon before, but I am now 10 years older and more than 10 pounds heavier! It’s so much harder now trying to train and run for hours around the juggle of being a working mum. However I have seen and experienced the benefits of this charity first hand so I am motivated to keep going, knowing how well the money is spent.
I did some research previously to support patients to eat and drink even when this is known to be unsafe, such as when they are becoming weak towards the end of their life. We developed a system to ensure patients were facilitated to make their own decisions despite risks or staff concerns, including open discussions with family and a system of documentation. Once we developed the system the charity funded a 3 year project to develop the evidence base and ensure that this becomes routine practice.
As the largest critical care centre in Europe, the staff workforce at Guys and St Thomas are very fatigued after working with many critically unwell covid patients for last few years. During the worst of the pandemic, the charity also funded a weekly hour of ‘time out’ to support physical mental health.
These are just a couple of things I have experienced personally from the charity, but they fund many other initiatives including staff counselling and research into long covid.
Thanks in advance for your support both financially and personally. Marathon training is hard!! I really appreciate all the encouragement to keep going so I can make it to the start line!
