Sarah's Volunteering with Refugee Support in Chisinau, Moldova

Sarah Lowry is raising money for Refugee Support Europe

Volunteering with Refugee Support in Chișinău, Moldova · 15 December 2022

Across the UK and Europe, displaced people face an increasingly hostile environment, often after a traumatic journey. RSE's pioneering Dignity Centres provide a safe, welcoming space where our members can choose essential food and clothing; and access admin support as they rebuild their lives.

Story

Refugee Support Europe started operating in one of the Greek Government’s official refugee camps back in April 2016 and went on to work in seven other refugee camps in Greece (including in Filippiada where I spent some volunteer time in late 2017).

The organsiation now runs 'Dignity Centres" in Nicosia Cyprus and Chișinău Moldova offering critical support tailored to the needs of refugees and asylum seekers in those cities.

The 'Dignity Centres' offer a range of support. At their heart is the 'Dignity Market' – an innovative way of distributing food to an ever-changing group of refugees and asylum seekers in greatest need. It’s dignified, offers choice and allows for a little normality at a time of unimaginable upheaval and distress.

I'll be spending three weeks in Chișinău over Christmas and New Year, assisting with RS as it supports Ukrainian refugees who have been forced by Russia's war to leave their country and cross into Moldova.

Acknowledging the cost of living crisis here, energy bills soaring, mortgage rates rising, I know times are difficult... but even a tiny donation will be well spent and ensure that life is made just a little bit easier for a Ukrainian refugee family this Christmas.

THANK YOU.
