Story

Due to a fairly severe Achilles injury. I am unable to participate in the half marathon In 2021. I have signed up for 2022 though as I am determined not to give up on this dream! All of your very kind donations will still hold me accountable and keep me motivated for next year!

For those of you who were lucky enough to have met my Mum, she will need no introduction; I’m sure you will agree that she was vivacious, courageous, ambitious and, most importantly, kind and caring.

When we were told that she was ill and had around 18 months left to live, my heart was shattered. She was, without a doubt, the most special person in the world to me and we were so, so close.

She actually only survived about half of that time - which could have been viewed as a huge injustice. But I have learned not to see it that way - we must always look for the positives in any situation, like she did! After all, I AM her daughter! The way I now see it is that we were so lucky to have her for all the time we did - as the saying goes: the brightest candles burn the fastest.

Mum never faltered from her ‘gung ho’ spirit, despite the fact she knew she was very poorly. She retained her positive attitude and carried on working until the very last minute - she’d wake up each day with a smile for me, no matter how hard it was.

During this time, Macmillan helped us: I’m not ashamed to say that they helped us pay for a new shower as ours had broken. They helped me personally by providing counselling. They also, most profoundly, arranged end of life care for Mum at short notice, despite her having private medical insurance (who ‘couldn’t do much without an available consultant’ and told us to ‘call back next week’). Without Macmillan, I have no doubt that our already difficult journey would have been 100 times worse.

So for that reason, I am choosing to do the thing I hate the most - running! And not just a little race like a 5k to start me off - I’m diving straight in with a half marathon! So please, if you can, sponsor me with what you can afford - I promise you that if this was going to be anywhere near easy for me I wouldn’t have chosen it- my Mum rose to her challenges, so I can too xxx
