Story
Thank you so much for even taking the time to read my page. The Alzheimer's Society is a charity that is very close to my heart and I previously raised £194 when I completed Men's Health Survival of the Fittest. I'm not a natural runner so this 10k will be a big challenge (just ask the PT from my gym-never have I run a 10k with him for fear I wouldn't be able to do it!). With your help, I'm hoping that I can raise some more money for this charity. Below are my reasons for choosing this charity:
For many people who have not experienced this illness personally, it's important to know that Dementia is more than being 'forgetful.' It is not a normal part of growing old and it is something that can affect a person of any age group.
Dementia is caused by a series of diseases or strokes that attacks the brain and it is a progressive illness which means that the symptoms will get progressively worse. Alzheimer's is the most common form of Dementia and this illness not only affects a persons memory, but it can also affect their entire personality and behaviour. There are currently 850,000 people in the UK suffering from Dementia and this number is set to rise in 2015 to 1 million.
My grandmother's name is Dilys and she has been a sufferer of Dementia and Alzheimer's for almost a decade. She needs 24 hour care and is totally unaware of where and who she is. I cannot tell you how difficult and how heartbreaking it is to have seen my nan go from a proud, funny and caring mother and grandmother to a woman who barely recognises her family, let alone herself. My nan is physically and mentally unrecognisable to the woman she was before she began suffering the disease.
Unfortunately there is no cure to this disease and this is a disease that only continues to progress-there is no way to stop a person deteriorating.
My nan is already suffering and unfortunately she will not be cured. But hopefully, if money continues to be raised, we will be able to fight Dementia and find a cure and I hope that I can be a part of it.
Thank you for taking the time to read my story and for your support.
