Story
I will be running the Birmingham half marathon in aid of Action for M.E.
M.E. is a chronic, fluctuating illness affecting 250,000 people in the UK. It is a serious and debilitating physical illness of uncertain duration and there is currently no cure M.E.
M.E. affects various body systems, more commonly the nervous and immune systems. Many people become bedbound or housebound for some time. Feeling extremely tired or exhausted most or all of the time is one of the main symptoms of M.E. We all feel tried at times but this feels very different from ordinary tiredness, simple tasks can leave you feeling shattered or struggling to function. Simply holding a conversation can become difficult if not impossible. This extreme tiredness affects suffers ability to perform simple tasks and dramatically limits the life style and quality of life of suffers.
In addition to the exhaustion suffers are also dealing with muscle and/or joint pain, sleep disturbance, ’flu-like symptoms and problems with memory and concentration. Symptoms fluctuate and this unpredictable element of the illness can be one of the most frustrating and depressing thing for sufferers to deal with.
Some people with M.E. recover fully, many improve significantly over time but there are those who remain very ill.
Action for M.E. will provide information and support for suffers and their families, while campaigning for better services, more effective treatments and driving and investing in research.
