Story

Hi I'm Sarah, welcome to my fundraising page!

I have been riding since a very early age and always loved animals - particularly horses, and so I decided to study Equine Science at University. While studying, myself and a few friends discussed the possibilities of fundraising for a BHS Challenge Ride. After graduating, we all kept in touch and the plans reformed.

The British Horse Society is a fantastic charity, dealing with all areas of equestrianism from providing internationally recognised equestrian qualifications and setting up sporting events to providing information and support from legal advice to care sheets. I am particlarly intereted in supporting the welfare aspects of the BHS.

Through my experiences in the horse world, I have come across many cases of neglect, all of which could be avoided if the owners were better informed about the commitents involved with horse care. I have managed to rescue four horses(three are pictured above), all neglected under different circumstances. However, all four of these cases could have been avoided if the owners had been prepared for the responsibilities of owning a horse. Unfortunately, particularly within the current financial situations, horse neglect is increasing. Horses are so easy to purchase with no current 'vetting' procedures of potential owners, but require commitment, high levels of maintenance and expense.

The British Horse Society Welfare Department handles more than 30,000 enquiries a year on every aspect of equine welfare. They aim to prevent cases of cruelty and neglect through education and support. This is achieved by providing advisory literature on issues such as Ragwort awareness, and a team of experienced and dedicated staff who handle all enquiries.

The BHS Welfare team is trained to respond promptly, and in an informed and sympathetic manner, to reports of equine suffering and neglect, giving advice and guidance to horse owners on a wide range of topics. The majority of cases that the BHS responds to neglect rather than cruelty. Most cases can be resolved by the education of horse owners.

As well as responding to welfare concerns, BHS Welfare lobbies government on a number of welfare-related issues; runs campaigns including the Ragwort Awareness Campaign; promotes responsible breeding through its close link with the BHS Horse and Pony Breeds Committee; works closely with other welfare organisations; and monitors the horses and ponies within the BHS's Re-home Scheme.

Your donation could save unnecessary suffering, pain or even death in horses and ponies throughout the United Kingdom.

Support the BHS and help to make a difference to horses’ lives. Even the smallest amount will make a difference.
