In September I will volunteer for 3 months on a development program me in Ghana. This is part of International Citizen Service (ICS), which brings young people together to work in sustainable community projects, in my case I will be part of Abrobiano's team, in Ghana.

If you know me, you probably already know that I am against voluntourism or any project that charges money to the volunteers. And this is one of the reasons why I chose to be part of ICS. ICS, unlikely most of the initiatives nowadays, pays for all of our expenses (flights, visas, vaccines, training, monthly allowances, organizes our accommodation within local families, etc..) which means we don't spend any money from our own pocket and we don't pay anything. Instead of money we pay with our skills, work, positivism and commitment. The reason why we have to fundraise is exactly to show our commitment to the project and to spread the word about ICS. Another reason why we need to fundraise is because in all the countries where ICS is working, we work side by side with in-country volunteers but they are also from outside the community where we will be living and working. Therefore, UK and in-country volunteers will be working and living together, to share experiences and to exchange knowledge and skills.     

 I’ll be working alongside volunteers from Ghana, on a project that supports grassroots educational programmes, in order to help the youth to gain life and work skills (including leadership, ICT and budgeting skills, etc). When the youth acquire these skills, they will become more employable and challenged to look for jobs. Another key goal is to involve more women in our projects, hoping that we will achieve a more balanced genders inclusion. ICS works with communities that have specifically requested their help. It also aims to inspire young people in the UK and overseas to become active citizens who are passionate about long term community development.

I need to raise £800 for Lattitude who are one of the respected development charities that deliver ICS. This will allow them to continue to bring about positive change in the developing communities where they work.
