Story
My fabulous husband Christopher was diagnosed last year with a very rare bone cancer (dedifferentiated chondrosarcoma). Several years ago my wonderful Aunt Juliet was diagnosed with another form of bone cancer called a chordoma. Primary bone cancer (also known as Bone Sarcoma) is incredibly rare with only a few hundred cases each year in the UK of all types. Having two cases in the family is like lightning striking twice. Christopher is even more of a rarity as there are only a handful of cases of his sub-type a year.
Both chondrosarcoma and chordomas are resistant to chemotherapy meaning that treatment options are very limited. Surgery is the main treatment, which is usually quite drastic, but should the cancer spread then there are few options.
Rare cancers like primary bone cancer do not get much research money so it is vital that charities like the Bone Cancer Research Trust exist to focus on supporting valuable research in this area. With exciting developments such as gene inhibitors being investigated there is a chance that a cure will be found for this brutal disease and so I am running the London Marathon to raise some more funds towards that research.
Everything and anything which you can donate is much appreciated by us all.
Thank you.
