Story
I am so excited to announce, I am swimming the channel mid June.
Having crossed the English Channel by train, car, ferry, bus
and plane frequently for the last 20+ year, I have often wondered what it would be like to swim it.
Now that I have decided to leave London and move back to Europe, swimming the channel this year seems like the perfect closure to my channel crossings.
I have dipped my tippy toes in the channel on the British,
French and Belgian side and can assure you, it wasn’t inviting. Due to
this years’ awful spring weather we have been told to expect sea water temperatures to be 12-13 deg if we're lucky.
We have also been informed by our skipper, the easiest part of this
challenge is the swimming, dealing with the acclimatisation, afterdrop, sea sickness and jellyfish stings takes this challenge to another level.
Im sure once on the boat, I will wish I should have stuck to the Eurostar!
We are a team of 6, 4 women and 2 men, who will be rotating
every hour on a fisherman’s boat, from Dover to Calais. The shortest distance is 22miles/35 Km in a straight line however due to the tide, we will probably have to tackle an S-shape course, expecting to finish anytime between 15-22 hours, with a start time at 2am. Yes, a channel night swim is included in the package…wetsuits, thermal hats, gloves, socks are not allowed, we will be swimming in skins.
The charity the team is supporting is Children’s Air Ambulance, the first and only dedicated neonatal and paediatric helicopter
emergency transfer service in the country. The aircraft have been fitted with the latest in life-saving equipment - meaning they are a mini intensive care unit in the sky.
The last 12 months have been the toughest in the charity's
history. The pandemic has seen donations fall by more than £2 million, yet the service is more in demand than ever before with all its services free of charge. The Children’s Air Ambulance receives no
funding from the government or National Lottery for its missions, it relies on voluntary donations to raise the £3,500 needed for every mission.
By supporting my charitable interests and hobbies, I appreciate
you have gone above and beyond for me, for this I am humbled and grateful.
