Story
When I was young, I shared a room with my sisters. At night, in our little bedroom world, our older sister would read aloud to us. Carbonel: King of the Cats! He was magnificent! Those words took us places; filled our heads with magic and possibility, and our hearts with a love of books and reading, which in turn enabled us to become who we are today.
Now I am old (er!) - and if I'm honest really not very good at running at all - I want to help to give other children those same memories and opportunities. I want there to be, somewhere, in the future, two old friends on a park bench, who have travelled the world and done amazing things, reminiscing about their childhoods:
"Do you remember when the Doorstep volunteers used to come onto our estate with books and read with us? How we used to watch for them leaving the block opposite and then we knew it was our turn next?"
"Oh I do! I told them I loved the night sky and they brought me books about stars and space. Do you know, I think that's where my career in astronomy actually began. Fancy a cuppa?"
Doorstep Library is a community-focused charity dedicated to bringing the gift of books and the joy of reading directly into the homes of children across London who need our support. We believe in the power of words to take children places, not just in their imagination, but in their lives. We want to see a world where all children can thrive in homes in which books are celebrated and a love of reading is embraced.
Every donation makes a difference, however small, so if you can donate that would be amazing! But if you can't, don't worry - just send me good vibes and I will carry them with me as I plod round!
Thank you.X
