Story
So who am I. My name is Sandra and I have worked as a nurse for 25 years now and seen many people, friends and family loose their battle with Cancer or suffered when having the traditional types of treatment, such as Radiotherapy or Chemotherapy.
However, a recent visit to the Cancer Research Unit at Addenbrookes Hospital, towards the end of last year, has left me speechless. They have been using some of the different methods for research into Genetics and have been able to find out the specific requirements for each patient as to the type of Cancer, how it affect the cell and a specific treatment that will irradicate it. As a result of this breakthrough, patients will no longer have a 50/50 chance of the treatment working, and as research becomes more refined, people may start to live longer or may not die as a result of the cancer.
So what I could I do, to raise some money for the reseach centre, doing something that I love.
Well, in 1999, a friend used to hate taking me on the back of his motorbike and told me to pass my test and get my own, which is precisely what I did and have been riding a Harley-Davidson ever since. When I first started riding, there was a challenge, for anyone to visit all the Harley-Davidson dealers in mainland UK and any surrounding islands, in 7 days! Well, what could be better than to do something that I really enjoy, to raise some money for CRUK and hopefully make my job slightly easier in the future.
The journey will be 2,650 miles in length, visiting Ireland and Jersey and visiting over 30 Harley-Davidson Delaerships. I have refined the journey to take 7 days exactly, so long as there are no major hicupps.
Then last year, I was finally pursuaded to join Burghley Park and Peterborough Ladies Club for Cancer Research UK. I am currently their Health & Safety Representative. We raise money for Cancer Research UK and after 37-38 years of the clubs existance, they have raised just over £700,000. Most of this money now goes to the Research Centre at Addenbrookes Hospital, but we have also raised money for new equipment and supports 3 clinical trials last year. These trials are run by Addenbrookes Hospital but Peterborough City Hospital runs a satalite clinic for Cancer treatments for Addenbrookes Hospital and these trials took place at Peterborough.
