Story

Thanks for taking the time to visit our JustGiving page.

On October the 21st 2018 we (Team Sam’s Sloths) will be challenging ourselves to run/walk/stumble/crawl around the 10 mile course of the Great South Run in memory of Sam, our amazing son/nephew, who devastatingly lost his two year battle against leukaemia on 12th May 2016 at the age of just 21.

We are raising money for the Teenage Cancer Trust (TCT) charity. Sam received his treatment on the Teenage and Young Adult (TYA) unit at Southampton General Hospital which was funded with the aid of TCT. Around 7 young people aged between 13 and 24 are diagnosed with cancer every day in the UK. They need expert treatment and support from the moment they hear the word cancer. TCT are the only charity dedicated to making this happen. The TYA unit at Southampton allows young people to be with other patients their own age. It was designed by young people who have completed their treatment. The unit has 6 ensuite rooms and a social space including fully equipped kitchen/dining area as well as jukebox, pool table, TVs and gaming areas with comfortable seating. Whilst Sam was receiving his treatment on the TYA unit we had the privilege to meet other patients and their families going through the same rollercoaster journey and who we now refer to as our TYA family. Without their love and support our journey would have been impossible. Therefore we will also be running/walking/stumbling/crawling in memory of our TYA stars who are no longer with us and for our TYA warriors who are still fighting. They, along with Sam, will be our inspiration to get us around the course and across that finish line.

Our fellow TYA family members, Tanya and Carl Appleby, have been tirelessly raising money for the Teenage Cancer Trust, in memory of their son Vincent, through their “A Vision for Vincent One Day at a Time” appeal and we would like our fundraising donations to be added to their total. One Day at a Time, in Vinnies words, has become our TYA family motto and one that we will all carry with us for the rest of our days. Along with Sam’s motto too, You’ll never walk alone.
