9th December 2013

Sam was a devoted and loving husband, for 56 years, to his wife Barbara who sadly passed away last year. He was a true gentleman, with a special gift where people were concerned, though his family always came first. Sadly orphaned at 10, his sister, Julie and brother Bill always looked out for each other.

Mum & dad met at St. Laurence's Church youth group in Upminster, Essex in their mid-teens, but life intervened until a chance meeting on a train just before mum's 21st birthday. They married at St. Laurence's and had three children, Claire, Mel & John whom they loved unconditionally. Dad worked hard as a Chartered Acountant to provide for his family. We had a wonderfully happy upbringing. He wanted us to have what was denied him; a loving and supportive family.

Dad always believed in tolerance and understanding. He never let the sun go down on an argument, forever the peacemaker. His strong moral compass provided a backbone for the family. He had a tremendous sense of humour and was a great racconteur. In his company people were made to feel special. He expected certain standards to be maintained, however, and was no pushover. When the way forward seemed tough he was heard to say a number of times "tuck your skirt into your knickers and get on with it".

Dad adored his seven grandchildren and they in turn adored him. Time at the grandparents' always meant fun and adventure; bedtime stories (made up by him) 'breakfast club' and button moon. There were trips to the beach, crabbing, obstacle courses and bike rides. Mum & dad seemed to enjoy a second childhood.

Those affected directly or indirectly by dementia will know the devastation it causes to the sufferer and to close ones. Dad was a gentleman to the end and never complained or bemoaned his lot. In the final months and weeks it was still possible to make a connection with him, even when he was unable to say much.

Everyone who came into contact with him adored him, and his nursing home staff were no different. He maintained a cheerful disposition for the most part, even when he became bedridden or 'confined to barracks' as he would have put it. He knew his children were with him at the end and it was time to be re-united with his wife, brother and parents. Dad had a strong faith and this was upheld to the last. We are happy and relieved for him, but miss him dreadfully.

Dad passed away on 15th August 2013. His ashes are interred togther with mum's in St. Laurence's churchyard where his marriage and family life began.
