Story
Thank you for visiting our fundraising page. Please dig deep and sponsor us for this once in a lifetime adventure, in memory of someone who was one in a million.
On February 8, 2006 Maxine was diagnosed with secondary Liver Cancer. During her illness she remained a pillar of strength for all those around her, including her loving family and husband. She was someone who gave so much and asked for so little in return. Anyone who had the opportunity of being close to Maxine felt the warmth and care that she offered, without prejudice. She was truly a unique individual, one who will not be forgotten by all of those who knew and loved her. Having put up such a brave fight, Maxine passed away on 26th March 2006, aged 32 years.
This is why we have both chosen Henshaws Society for Blind People (HSBP) as our nominated charity. Maxine was such a highly regarded teacher of Arts & Crafts at the college, in Harrogate . Being the individual she was, she became an integral part of the entire college always finding the extra time to support her pupils and fellow colleagues.
In every aspect of Maxine's life, those who knew her thought highly of her and valued her kindness and friendship. Maxine will be truly missed.
We will be paying for the cost of the trip ourselves so all the monies
raised will go straight to HSBP.
Trek Summary
We will be embarking on the trip on the 4th August 2006. The trip is graded as Strenuouswith walks of 6-8 hours on most days, reaching a maximum altitude of 5,545m. Our goal is Base Camp but also Kalar Patar, for the best views of Everest. Achieving both these goals is dependant on weather, fitness and acclimatization.
Kathmandu to Namche Bazaar
After exploring Kathmandu we fly to Lukla, from where our trek to Everest commences. The trail follows the course of the Dudh Kosi, the 'River of Milk', gradually climbing through forests of rhododendron and magnolia. There are rest days at Namche Bazaar (the delightful Sherpa capital) and at Dingboche village (set below the spectacular peak of Ama Dablam) - to help adjust to the altitude.
Base Camp & Kalar Patar
By the time you reach Lobuche the temperature has dropped and you’ll be walking among frozen rivers in an icy wilderness. From here you make the trek to Base Camp itself – at the foot of the world’s highest peak. The next day it’s on to the final highlight – Kalar Patar (5,545m) with stunning views of Everest and the Khumbu Glacier cascading below.
The ‘Chai Bhati’
Established to provide lodging for local Nepalis on journeys to move goods and produce across the mountain passes, the ‘chai bhati’ (or tea house) has become one of the most popular ways to explore the mountains in . This trip is a ‘tea house trek’ - you’ll enjoy the rustic facilities and, through interaction with local people, gain a real insight into daily life in the Himalayas.

Maxine's Mum is also raising money for Henshaw's, by climbing the equivelant height of Everest Base Camp, in th UK, by climbing the three Yorkshire & three National Peaks at the same time as we are out treking to Everest (visit her web page at: www.justgiving.com/maryevanson).
