Great Strides Brecon Beacons · 3 June 2023 ·
In June 2023, we are taking part in the Great Strides 20km walking challenge across the mountainous Brecon Beacons in support of our close friend Annie who has lived with Cystic Fibrosis (CF) for 25 years.
Cystic Fibrosis (CF) is a genetic condition affecting more than 10,800 people in the UK. It's caused by a mutation in the CFTR gene, which controls the movement of salt and water in and out of cells. People with CF experience a build up of thick sticky mucus in the lungs, digestive system and other organs, which causes a wide range of challenging symptoms affecting the entire body. People with CFR often experience lung and liver disease, arthritis and a multitude of other conditions and symptoms. Long hospital stays are common, and patients often have to spend hours taking over 40 medications a day, including intravenous antibiotics. Unfortunately, it's common for patients to eventually need organ transplants. Annie has been on the waiting list for a double lung transplant for over 3 years and now requires oxygen 24 hours a day.
The money we raise by taking part in this event is vital in supporting the CF Trust to continue to do all of the amazing things that they do for people with CF, such as providing transplant grants and conducting further research to learn as much as possible and subsequently develop new treatments.
