Story
On Sunday 26th September, 2021, I will be running the Potters ‘Arf Marathon to raise vital funds for the Dougie Mac Hospice.
You never imagine you or a loved one will need the care of the Dougie Mac. But when our amazing dad, Mick Harrison, was diagnosed with a terminal brain tumour in July 2019, they were there for us right from the beginning to the end of our journey.
It’s hard to express what an incredible person my dad was. Many of you were lucky enough to know him and the outpouring of love and respect for him has been overwhelming and humbling. Even when he was in the Dougie Mac, as terribly poorly as he was, he took the time to get to know every doctor, nurse, assistant, carer, cleaner and volunteer. He knew their names and made them feel special and important.
The care they gave my dad was exceptional. Even before he was admitted as an inpatient, the hospice provided physiotherapy as well as advice and support for our whole family, especially my mum, Karen, and my sister Pip. When dad was admitted in February 2020, the care he received was astounding. If he wanted a bath at midnight, he could have one. If he wanted sandwiches at 2am, it was no problem. In fact, one nurse went out and bought him oatcakes on a Sunday morning because he fancied some.
Dougie Mac gave my dad dignity, comfort and peace in his final weeks. By taking away the burden of care, they gave us the precious time with him that we so desperately wanted and needed. Dad passed away five days after his 59th birthday on 2nd April 2020.
Inspired by my dad’s story and his legacy, three of his former colleagues from Staffordshire County Council will also be running several races to contribute to the fundraising total. Martyn Baggaley, Natasha Moody and Julie Long will all be running the Stafford Half Marathon on 19th September and Martyn will be also running the Chester Marathon on 3rd October. I have been humbled by their efforts and how much they loved and respected my dad.
The pandemic has meant that many fundraising events that the Dougie Mac rely on simply haven’t happened. 80% of the day to day running costs of the hospice is funded by charitable donations from people like you and I. I know many people have faced financial hardship in the last year but even if you could sponsor me the smallest amount, I would be so grateful. I used to run with my dad although I have never ran this far in my life! I have been training hard in the snow, rain (mostly), wind and sunshine so far this year and hope to do my dad proud and raise funds for the most incredible cause.
Thank you.
