Sam's Birthday Bike Ride

Sam’s Birthday Bike Ride · 27 February 2021
Inspired by Captain Tom Moore, for Sam’s 8th Birthday he has set himself the challenge of completing a bike ride to raise money for the Sheffield Children’s Hospital Charity. He’s aiming for 20 miles!
The money will go specificially to the Osteogenesis Imperfecta (OI) Therapy Fund. This is used by the Metabolic Bone Disease Team where I work as a Clinical Nurse Specialist.
Children with OI (also known as brittle bone disease) have fragile bones which can break easily, as well as hypermobile joints. They can require a whole range of equipment in order to enjoy their lives like any other child. This could be things like; special pens which are easier for children with hypermobile joints to hold, seating for school to prevent back pain, specially adapted small wheelchairs and walking frames, adapted clothing for new born babies, suitable chairs and feeding equipment for toddlers.
Physical activity is very important for children and young people with OI, so we may look into buying an OI suitable trike, to loan to families, to encourage a future generation of cyclists, inspired by Sam!
