The 29 of October will mark a year since we lost our Mum. As a family we wanted to try and mark the day with something positive, because, as full of sadness as the day will inevitably be, we know that she would want us to find something good in it.

 And so we are setting up Mo’s Memorial Fund, raising money for the Queen Elizabeth Hospital Heart & Lung Transplant Unit. Because, although it was cancer that took her from us in the end, it was the lungs that she received in 2005, that gave her a new life.

 Almost as soon as she’d recovered from the transplant mum started raising money for the fund, and many of you, like us, will have mementos from her charitable work. She got creative and knitted like crazy; baby clothes, strange animals and even a few rather accurate look-a-like dolls. Birthdays and anniversaries were marked with sponsored balloon blows, one for every year; these were very poignant for us all, as, thanks to her new lungs she now had enough ‘puff’.

 Mum was so grateful for this ‘second life’ and felt the Heart & Lung Transplant charity was often overlooked, so she became a great fundraiser. When we sent - what was at the time - her last donation (raised by friends and family at her funeral), I thought how sad she would be to see the end of these much-needed donations.

 So today we’ll start again, in her memory. To continue to say thank you to her donor and their family, to help enable the amazing team at The Birmingham Queen Elizabeth Hospital to maintain their incredible work, but most of all to remember an incredibly brave (though she would deny this) and generous spirit.
