Story
I am one of the Haematology Doctors working on Alaw ward, Ysbyty Gwynedd, Bangor. I never cease to be humbled by the strength, warmth and generosity of the people I meet and would like to give a something back, above and beyond what can be delivered through the NHS itself.
It's not unusual for me to have to tell someone bad news, unfortunately it comes as part of the job. But often it's the little things that make the news, diagnosis and treatment discussion hard. For many (both male and female) one of the big questions is "Will I lose my hair?" For many this is an inevitable consequence of their treatment. They have no choice. This can be devastating and cause significant psychological pain. For some this is worse than the treatment itself. I know several beautiful ladies of all age ranges who will refuse to be seen in public without their wigs (or even venture into their own garden to hang out the clothes without their wig).
To try to support current and future patients embarking on their hair loss inducing chemotherapy treatments, I'm choosing to join them, and hope to help/ inspire one or two venture outside without a wig. My hair will be donated to the Little Princess Charity to make wigs for the children and young adults of the region, and I will continue my work in Ysbyty Gwynedd, without a wig.
And just to try to make as much money as possible for Alaw, I've volunteered to get my head shaved in public (on the big stage), at the start of the superb local charity event that is Snowdonia Rocks, hosted by the inspirational Mike and Jules Peters. My daughters' and I will then accompany the group on a 20 km walk before completing the day with the Zip World Velocity 2 challenge. I do not like heights and last time I did anything this foolish was as a student, many years ago. I screamed rather loudly and attracted much attention to a bungee jump, so much so the owners refunded me my money!
So please give what you can. I promise every penny donated will be spent on a very good cause supporting the nurses and patients of Alaw ward with the important extras the NHS just cannot afford to provide.
Thank you for any and all contributions ❤
