Story
Walking for 10 miles through London is not a great physical achievement. But Maggie's Cultural Crawl is about the ethos of a cancer charity focused on "not losing the joy of living in the fear of dying".It is about drawing attention to a charity and cause that offers families space, beauty, comfort and dignity at a time when they need it most.
Built in the grounds of cancer hospitals around Britain, Maggie's Centres provide practical, emotional and social support to patients and their families and friends as they face the challenges of coping with cancer.
Founded by Maggie Keswick Jencks, who died of cancer in 1995, the charity reflects her belief in the ability of beautiful surroundings to uplift people. The buildings that house the 17 centres have been designed by leading architects including Frank Gehry, Zaha Hadid and Richard Rogers.
She also believed that no-one should have to hear devastating news from a busy consultant in a hospital corridor because there are no spare rooms. Warm and welcoming, full of light, the centres provide space and respite and a wide range of professional support, with an emphasis on the patient's whole well-being.
People with cancer need so much more than medicine - they need Maggie's Centres.
I do hope you are able to contribute a donation, however small.
With many thanks
Sally
